Investigations into the deadly Ebola outbreak in the DRC revealed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus, complicating control efforts.
An alert was raised on May 5 following the deaths of four healthcare workers in the Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from an unknown illness. Rapid response teams were dispatched to investigate. Subsequent testing at a research center in Kinshasa identified the cause as the Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses implicated in the outbreak.
